NSX Rig

In addition to the standard NS14 sails of 9.3sq m, I have developed a slightly larger mainsail which fits on to the same mast and boom with no modification.

It is 8.2sq m, giving a total area of 10.6sq m including the jib. I call this configuration the NSX.

I wanted this extra sail for two reasons - firstly, I sail on a lake which seems to get more than its fair share of light winds - certainly more than I imagine they get in Sydney. Secondly, I wanted to maximise my options for finding a crew. The standard NS is great for sailing with your wife or kids (about 120-145 kg), but the NSX extends the range of crew weights to 140-170kg or so, so is suitable for sailing with your mates.

At 10.6sqm this is still a small rig (smaller tha an Enterprise or RS200) but it is more powerful than the standard NS rig. The intention is that larger teams can race the larger rig on equal terms with the smaller crews in the standard NS14.

In the photo's in the gallery, the sail with the NS insignia is the standard main sail. the blank main is the larger NSX. Also note that I am sailing it singlehanded in the photo's, but it was only a Force 1!
